Shikhar Dhawan: Was Virat Kohli the reason for Gabbar’s inclusion in the team? Reports reveal surprising details

Virat Kohli: In India’s ODI squad for the home series against Sri Lanka, Shikhar Dhawan was one of the most notable names to be absent. As Dhawan has a track record of success in ICC competitions, it was assumed that the senior batsman will keep his spot given that India will host the World Cup the following year. However, Shubman Gill’s performance and Ishan Kishan’s double-century made it tough for the selectors.

Virat Kohli fought to keep Gabbar in the team

Dhawan, who led the ODI team on the recent New Zealand tour, had to make way for Gill, who was rested for the ODI series against Bangladesh. Despite being dropped, Dhawan’s options may still be open, and a strong IPL performance could lead to his comeback.

Dhawan had not been removed from the ODI team since 2013 before this occasion. Early in 2021, according to reports, he was on the verge of losing his position. Virat Kohli reportedly fought valiantly to keep Dhawan in the ODI squad for the series against England last year. Back then, Kohli led Team India as its captain.

Shikhar Dhawan ‘s recent dip in form

As the third-highest run-scorer in the series, Dhawan proved his captain correct by scoring 169 runs in 3 ODIs. Additionally, he went on to captain the Men in Blue for the following 16 months without permanent captains. Dhawan was dropped, though, as a result of his dip in form.

In 22 ODIs he played in 2022, the 37-year-old scored 688 runs. He didn’t even hit the three-figure barrier once on an average of 34.40. In three One-Day Internationals against Bangladesh, Dhawan managed to score 7, 8, and 3. Up to IPL 2023, there are no domestic white-ball tournaments scheduled, and Dhawan will take a break from senior cricket. In December 2019, he last took the field for a Ranji Trophy match.
