Sunil Chettri announced his retirement and stated that he will be playing his last match for the country very soon.

Sunil Chettri: Indian footballing icon and skipper Sunil Chettri has decided to hang up his boots for good. He announced his retirement in an emotional video where he talked about his future plans and what he will do.

The 39-year-old striker made his debut for India in 2005 against Pakistan and scored his first goal in the same match. It has been a brilliant career for the Indian star striker and is ranks third in the top International goal scorer with 94 goals in 150 matches.

He is also the most capped player in Indian history and it is arguable that he is the greatest player ever to wear that Blue jersey. Chettri stated that he will play his last match at the FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Kuwait.

Chettri posted a 10-minute-long video where he talked about his journey in the Indian cricket team. He told how excited he was when he was to debut for the country. He further stated that it was one of the best days of his life.

The striker never expected a 19-year-old career and never thought he would play this many matches in Blue colors. He further stated that he knew it was time to retire when he started remembering all his matches.

He was also grateful for the love and adoration he got from the fans and stated that he had been pampered. Chettri further stated that he is hopeful for the future generation and will play every remaining match with complete dedication and will enjoy every training session.

A Decorated Career

Chettri has had an amazing career. He has won the AIFF Player Of The Year Award 6 times and was also awarded the Arjuna Award in 2011 and Padma Shri in 2019. It has been a sensational 19 years at the top and now he is ready to face the challenge “One More Time.”
