Sunil Gavaskar: The inaugural World Cup of international cricket occurred on June 7, 1975. At Lord's, the tournament's inaugural game featured hosts England against India. Unfortunately for Indian cricket, though, the day would go down in history as one of the most embarrassing and forgettable ever.
India faced a difficult assignment after England amassed 334/4 in 60 overs thanks to the contributions of Dennis Amiss (137), Keith Fletcher (68), and Chris Old (51). When the time was righ to assault, defensive cricket strategy was used by none other legendary player Sunil Gavaskar.
After facing 174 balls, Gavaskar scored 36 runs and continued to be unbeaten. India finished with 132/3, losing the match by 202 runs. The best scorer, Gundappa Viswanath, scored 37 off 59. The opener's performance drew intense criticism since he was charged with aiming to maintain his tournament average. His detractors refuted this remark by pointing out that England had scored more than 300 runs in response to his claim that it was tough to score runs off the wicket.
Whatever the cause, he only hit one boundary in his whole innings and didn't appear to be about to be caught. To put it bluntly, India made little attempt to score runs, and the final score plainly showed that.
Overall, it was not a pleasant day for Indian supporters or cricket fans in general as they witnessed one team easily win a game.
