T20 World Cup: The iconic T20 World Cup has witnessed some of the most classic wins, in addition to great upsets. In cricketing terms, upset means a defeat of the team which was favourites to win an important match but lost to a minnow team. There have been several matches and instances of the same happening at big stages including the world cups.
Today, we have curated a list of top five upsets in the history of T20 World Cups since its inaugural edition. This edition itself saw three great upsets and we have included those in the list.
1. Ireland vs England, 2022

The match at the MCG may have ended in rain, but Andy Balbirnie's team will believe they earned the victory after dominating for so long.
As chasing Ireland's respectable total of 157 runs, England struggled to gain any momentum and will regret the fact that they fell five runs short(DLS). England required 53 off 33 balls when rain started to pour in and England score of 104 didn’t sit well with the DLS.
2. Netherlands vs South Africa, 2022

South Africa were favourites to win the match and many thought they have reached the semifinal as well but the stunning victory of Dutch eliminated all those hopes.
With a combined team effort, Netherlands scored 158 runs, which many thought was easily chase-able but Proteas lived to their name of Chokers at the end. They fell short by 13 runs and got knocked out of the tournament.
3. Zimbabwe vs Pakistan, 2022

Zimbabwe, who was in a strong position at 95/3, slumped to 95/7 as Pakistan's bowlers went on a rampage. They eventually scored 130/8 in their innings.
It first didn't seem like it would be enough, but Zimbabwe's outstanding bowling performance made sure of it.
Despite a cautious start by Pakistan in their pursuit of the winning total of 131 runs, Zimbabwe managed to get within striking distance thanks to two crucial Powerplay wickets that fell for cheap.
In the final over, Pakistan needed 11 runs to win. Two runs were required on the last over for atleast ensuring a super-over but Sikandar Raza's clutch throw that knocked the backrunner out after Shaheen Shah Afridi mishit the ball down the field caused them to lose the match.
4. Zimbabwe vs Australia, 2007

Nobody would have thought that mighty Aussies can lost to Zimbabwe in 2007.
Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist were both out in three overs by Elton Chigumbura's 3/20 total. Australia struggled to make just 138 runs as Gary Brent's 2/19 choked the middle order.
At the end, when Zimbabwe needed 12 runs off the final over, Brendan Taylor maintained composure. After facing 45 balls, he eventually scored 60 runs without being out, sweeping Nathan Bracken for four and stealing four leg-byes to secure the victory with one ball remaining.
5. Netherlands vs England, 2009

The Netherlands, who were playing in their first-ever T20 World Cup game, were given little opportunity to pull off an upset in the tournament's opening match in 2009, only for those odds to increase further after they scored 162.
At 23/2, the media had already started pre-writing, but Tom de Grooth's innings of 49 (30) and Peter Borren's 30 off 25 balls offered hope.
Although rain threatened to end the game, Ryan ten Doeschate and Edgar Schiferli had the final say. Ten Doeschate (22* from 17) demonstrated composure in the face of chaos, and Schiferli's scuffed slog outdid a sprawled Stuart Broad, who missed the run out opportunity that resulted in the winning overthrow on the last ball.
