Viral Video: The Paris Olympics 2024 has been a tournament of moments. This Summer Games was social media heavy and fans found themselves new heroes who instantly became a trend.
Be it Yusuf Dikec of Turkey, Kim Ye-Ji of South Korea, Imane Khelif of Algeria, and now Hamish Kerr of New Zealand. A high jumper who went viral on social media after his jump under the bar.
It was a tense final where the gold medalist would have to be decided by a jump-off. In the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, we got two gold medalists for the first time when Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy and Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim shared their top spot instead of going in a jump-off.
Viral Video: What A Jump
But Hamish Kerr and the USA’s Shelby McEwen wanted to distinguish themselves from each other and demanded a jump-off. Both of them cleared the 2.36-meter mark easily on their first try.
The bar was raised to 2.38m and both of them missed it this time. It was once again lowered down to 2.36m and both athletes failed again. The bar had to be lowered down to 2.34m which was cleared by Kerr to win the gold.
But before that final jump, a hilarious thing happened that has been making rounds on social media. As Kerr ran in to jump over the bar, he instead jumped under it onto the mat as it looked like someone, who had never participated in the high jump was taking part

After the event, Kerr stated “To do it the way I did it was just amazing. It was crazy. I have so much respect for what they did in Tokyo. But I always thought that to add to the story and to be able to be given the chance to actually do the jump-off would be so amazing.
I’m pretty sure Shelby was in the same mindset because we just looked at each other and it was pretty simple. We both just nodded and off we went.”
