Border-Gavaskar Trophy crucial for both teams

For both sides, this Test series between India and Australia is crucial. The top two teams in the World Test Championship will be determined by the results of a four-match Test series for the Border Gavaskar Trophy in 2023. Regardless of the outcomes of other series, India will qualify for the WTC Finals if they defeat Australia in the four-match Test series.

India won’t be able to make the top two if the India-Australia Test series ends in a 2-2 tie and Sri Lanka defeats New Zealand by a score of 2-0. Australia and Sri Lanka may thus also get to the World Test Championship final.
