Shreyas Iyer's brilliant century in the second ODI against Australia signified his impressive return, yet he firmly acknowledged Virat Kohli's stature and expressed his readiness to adapt to the team's needs regarding his batting position.

Shreyas Iyer made a remarkable comeback in the second ODI against Australia, displaying a fantastic innings. He scored 105 runs off 90 deliveries, striking 11 boundaries and three sixes in the process. Iyer’s outstanding performance earned him the Player of the Match award, and he discussed his journey of recovery and adaptability in his batting approach. On asked about, ‘stealing’ the no. the third spot from Kohli, he gave a mic drop moment.

Shreyas Iyer scores valiant century

The last half-year posed considerable challenges for Shreyas Iyer, as he grappled with a persistent back injury. Although he initially returned for the Asia Cup 2023, his back spasms prevented his participation in the crucial India-Pakistan Super 4 clash. Consequently, he was rested for the remainder of the tournament. However, in the India vs. Australia series, he seized the opportunity with great determination and now appears to be in peak form.

During the post-match ceremony, Iyer said, “It was a rollercoaster right, feeling fantastic. My teammates, friends, and family were there for my support. I was seeing the matches on TV, I wanted to be out there and participate in the matches. Grateful to be believing in myself. The pain and niggles kept on coming, but I knew what I was aiming for. Glad that I was able to execute my plans perfectly today. Basically, when I went in to bat, I didn’t want to complicate things. I wanted to get my eyes set, that’s how I give confidence to myself.”

Shreyas Iyer speaks about No.3 spot

In the second ODI between India and Australia, Shreyas Iyer occupied the number three batting position. However, with Virat Kohli‘s return to the squad for the third ODI, it is likely that Kohli will reclaim the number three spot, which might push Iyer down the order. Iyer acknowledged Kohli as “one of the greats” and stated unequivocally that he has no intention of displacing him from that position.

He said, “I am flexible, ready to bat in any position, whatever my team needs to do. Virat is one of the greats, no chance of stealing that spot from him. Need to keep scoring.”
