Virat Kohli’s former teammates to Become BCCI Umpires, Helped India Clinch 2008 U-19 World Cup | Details here

Under Virat Kohli ‘s captaincy, two of the players that helped India’s under-19 side win the 2008 Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia have now become BCCI umpires. Tanmay Srivastava, a 33-year-old opener, and pacer Ajitesh Argal, a 34-year-old bowler, have passed the BCCI’s umpiring test for former players, which was held in Ahmedabad in June. The results were released on July 26.

Staggering records of Tanmay and Ajitesh

Tanmay Srivastava, the elegant left-handed opener hailing from Uttar Pradesh, etched a memorable mark in the 2008 U-19 World Cup. With a remarkable tally of 262 runs in six matches at an impressive average of 52.40, he proved his mettle on the cricketing stage, including a crucial knock of 46 runs in the final against South Africa.

Tanmay scored  4918 runs, a 34.39 average, and an excellent total of 10 centuries and 27 fifties in 90 first-class games. He also has seven centuries and ten fifties in 44 matches of List A cricket, scoring 1728 runs at an average of 44.30. Tanmay has acquired the skills and understanding necessary to succeed as an umpire thanks to his experience as a player.

On the other hand, The 2008 U-19 World Cup’s “Man of the Final” right-handed medium-pace bowler and lower-order batsman Ajitesh Argal, had a remarkable two-for-seven performance in five overs against South Africa. In a game with few runs scored, his significant efforts enabled India to win by the D/L system by 12 runs.

Having featured in 10 first-class games and impressively securing 24 wickets at an average of 31.29, Ajitesh showcased his cricketing prowess. However, he later opted for a career in the Income Tax department, where he secured a position through the sports quota.

Training in August

Both Tanmay and Ajitesh have chosen to transition from being players to umpires due to their unwavering passion for cricket and their eagerness to contribute to the game at a higher level. Tanmay, expressed his enthusiasm for being a part of the esteemed BCCI umpiring panel, with aspirations of representing India in the International Cricket Council and making a meaningful impact on the sport.

The two umpires will be prepared to officiate Board-conducted games via the BCCI’s orientation programme and seminar in August by receiving crucial insights and knowledge.
