WIPL: Overwhelming craze ! Eight IPL teams submit bid for Women’s league; RCB and LSG not in the race

WIPL: The proposals for the Women’s IPL have been submitted by as many as eight of the 10 franchises from the Men’s IPL (WIPL). Only two teams—Lucknow Supergiants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru—are said to have declined to reveal if they submitted a bid, according to a report. On January 25, the winners will be declared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Which of the franchises are bidding for WIPL?

According to reliable sources, bids will be submitted by the Gujarat Titans, the defending IPL champions, Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, and Delhi Capitals. A report suggests that Manchester United owner Avram Glazer is also interested, thus the IPL clubs are not the only ones who have made offers.

A single party may vote for more than one location, since the BCCI has named 10 Indian cities in the competition. Bids will be taken for a ten-year period without a base price being established (2023-32). However, there is a requirement for eligibility in the tender document, which states that the bidder’s audited net worth must be at least INR 1000 crore as of March 31, 2022.

Companies involved in joint ventures or consortiums are not eligible. According to another report, the owners of Manchester United are interested in purchasing a Women’s IPL (WIPL) franchise. Avram Glazer, a member of the Glazer family who also owns Premier League powerhouses, had previously attempted to acquire both of the most recent IPL franchises with bids totaling more than 4,000 crores last year, but had been unsuccessful.

WIPL auction to be held on 25th January

Later, CVC Capitals outbid them and got the franchise in Ahmedabad, while Sanjiv Goenka of the RPS group was successful in winning the bid for the franchise in Lucknow. A spokesperson of the Glazers’ owned Desert Vipers said that Avram Glazer is “seriously exploring” to purchase a team in the forthcoming league. After Australia’s Women’s Big Bash Competition and New Zealand’s Super Smash, the WIPL is the third such women’s cricket league.

On January 25, an auction will be held by the BCCI, the league’s organisers. The Board has previously issued the invitation to tender, but has not yet disclosed who has expressed interest, as the deadline is on January 21.
