World Athletics Championship 2023: Mirabai Chanu is going all in to get that medal in Asian Games 2023. The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist has decided not to lift in the ongoing World Championship.
According to the rules, a weightlifter does not need to necessarily lift at the World Athletics Championship 2023 to be eligible for the Olympics. If the weightlifter takes part in the weigh-in and participates in the doping tests, they can be eligible for the Olympics.
So, it looks like Mirabai Chanu is going to opt for that route rather than participating in the tournament. Chanu has had a bad history of injuries and this might be a precautionary measure for that.
Will Weigh In At World Athletics Championship 2023
Mirabai had already achieved the tag of world champion in her 48 KG category back in 2017. According to the International Weightlifting Federation(IWF) rules, athletes have to take part in the World Championships.
However, according to the same rules, the weightlifters do not necessarily need to make a lift. Chanu has chosen that route so she can be eligible for the Paris Olympics in 2024.
According to an Indian Weightlifting Federation official, “She will not be lifting at the World Championships. Right now, the focus is to keep her fresh and fit for the Asian Games.” It won’t affect her chances as she is sitting in second position in the IWF’s Paris Olympic qualification rankings.
The Missing Trophy
For everyone who is wondering why Mirabai is doing that, it is because the Asian Games is the only tournament where she has not won anything. It is the only major medal that is missing from her trophy cabinet. It looks like she is hell-bent on changing that this year in China.
