Asian Games 2023: In a momentous achievement, Team India clinched a historic gold medal in the men’s cricket competition at the 2023 Asian Games following their thrilling final match against Afghanistan. Additionally, today, Indian men’s doubles badminton pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty etched their names in history by securing India’s maiden gold medal in badminton at the Asian Games.
Indian in Cricket at Asian Games 2023
The final showdown against Afghanistan had to be abandoned after 18.2 overs of play due to unfavourable weather conditions at the Pingfeng Cricket Campus Ground in Hangzhou on Saturday. As a result of their higher seeding, India was granted the gold medal.
Team India’s captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, won the toss and opted to field first, considering the looming threat of rain. Afghanistan had managed to score 112-5 in 18.2 overs, but subsequent play was hindered by persistent rain, preventing further action. This also marked India’s inaugural participation in cricket at the Asian Games, as the sport was introduced to the multi-sport event back in 2010 in Guangzhou.
Badminton
Coming to badminton, , the dynamic duo secured their victory by defeating the formidable Korean pair with an impressive scoreline of 21-18, 21-16 in a thrilling final match. This achievement marked India‘s first medal in men’s doubles in 41 years, a distinction not seen since Leroy D’sa and Pradeep Gandhe secured a bronze in the 1982 edition of the games. The medal also secured India’s most outstanding performance at the continental championships, culminating in three medals: a gold in men’s doubles, a silver in the men’s team event, and a bronze in men’s singles.
