World Athletics Championships 2023: As the World Athletics Championships reaches its fourth day, India has yet to experience a moment of celebration on this grand stage. Athletes like Avinash Sable and Eldhose Paul, who had previously excelled at the Commonwealth Games last year, faced setbacks as they couldn't progress beyond the qualification rounds. This circumstance further extends India's quest for a triumphant moment at the World Championships.
During Day 3 of the event, there were no Indian athletes participating. However, as the fourth day dawned, two Indian competitors are slated to take the stage.
Krishan Kumar
Recently securing a silver medal in the 800m sprint at the Asian Athletics Championships, Haryana based athlete Krishan is geared up for his upcoming challenge. His remarkable achievement last month involved clocking a personal best timing of 1:45.88. Krishan is scheduled to compete in Heat 1 of the event on Wednesday. His opponents in this heat include Gabriel Tual (1:44.23), Mohamed Ali Gouaned (1:44.43), and Emmanuel Wanyonyi (1:43.27). The 800m hurdles heats are set to commence at 10:50 pm IST.
Jyothi Yarraji
100m hurdles specialist Jyothi Yarraji is all set to participate in the heats of the tournament as the curtain-raiser event of the day. Notably, she holds the distinction of being the fastest Indian in the women's 100m hurdles. Following a somewhat disappointing 10th-place finish in the first round of the Commonwealth Games last year, Yarraji concluded the season on a high note by securing gold at the National Games, clocking a personal best of 12.79s. This achievement marked her as the first Indian woman to break the 13-second barrier.
In a subsequent feat, Yarraji achieved another national record by recording a time of 12.78s, earning a bronze medal at the FISU World University Games held in Chengdu earlier this month. However, the heats on Tuesday pose a challenging task, given the strong competition posed by athletes like Laeticia Bapte (12.69), Ditaji Kambundji (12.47), and Nadine Visser (12.51), all of whom hold a significant lead. The event is scheduled to commence at 10:10 pm IST.
