WTC: The ICC World Test Championship fianle clash of the 2021-23 cycle would take place from June 8 to 12, as per the sources. While the International Cricket Council (ICC) has not confirmed the formal dates, the game is expected to be hosted from June 8 to 12 at the Oval in London.
It is also believed that the global cricket governing body has set up one reserve day in case of rain. The tournament is set to follow a similar style to the 2018-21 edition, with both teams proclaimed as joint winners in the event of a draw or tie.
WTC 2023 to be played at Oval?
The previous cycle’s championship game was hosted at Southampton’s Rose Bowl, but according to a report, the game will be played at the Oval this time. It is worth noting that no side has firmly established its spot in the finals, with Australia, India, and Sri Lanka all still in contention.
Following overwhelming victories against England, the West Indies, and South Africa, Australia easily leads the ICC World Test Championship standings with 75.56 percentage points. Despite back-to-back red-ball series victories, the team has yet to secure a spot in the WTC finals, but they are one step closer than their opponents.
India eyeing for the spot in finals
Similarly, India is flying high after winning a Test series against Bangladesh in December of last year. Their next red-ball match is against arch rivals Australia, and it is critical for both heavyweights. The two will square off in a four-match Test series beginning on February 9 on Indian soil. A series sweep by India would effectively imply that team India would have secured a spot in the WTC finale battle in 2021-23.
With an intriguing series on the cards, India will aim to overcome their inability to overpower the Australians in the red-ball series. In Test matches, Australia enjoys a significant advantage of 43 victories versus India’s 30 wins in 102 matches.
