Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a landmark facility at Dahod, Gujarat, on Sunday, marking a major push toward ‘Make in India’ in the railway sector. The newly unveiled workshop will manufacture 120 high-power electric locomotive engines (9000 HP) every year, significantly strengthening India’s railway infrastructure and boosting regional economic growth.

“Visiting Dahod is always a special experience. The projects launched today will significantly boost rail infrastructure, enhance connectivity and drive economic growth of the region,” tweeted PM Modi.

 What Was Inaugurated?

The key highlight of the day was the unveiling of the India

n Railways’ first 9000-horsepower electric locomotive, developed under the Make in India initiative in partnership with Alstom. These locomotives are expected to transform heavy-haul freight movement, allowing for more efficient and faster cargo transport across the country.

The Dahod workshop, once a British-era repair depot, has now been transformed into a state-of-the-art production facility with modern technology and automation to support mass manufacturing.

Key Features of the Locomotive:

Horsepower: 9000 HP electric engines – India’s most powerful to date

Production Capacity: 120 engines annually

Technology Partner: French company Alstom under a ₹20,000 crore contract

Purpose: Designed for heavy freight movement with improved energy efficiency

Employment: Thousands of skilled and semi-skilled jobs for the region

 Regional & National Impact

This project is poised to catalyze economic activity in Dahod and surrounding tribal regions. Additionally, the indigenous manufacturing drive is in alignment with the Modi government’s focus on self-reliance and infrastructure development.

“This locomotive will not just strengthen Indian Railways, but will also empower our youth with jobs and skills,” PM Modi said during the event.

 A Step Towards Future-Ready Railways

With the integration of powerful electric locomotives, India is taking bold steps to reduce dependence on diesel, enhance green mobility, and modernize its massive rail network. The Dahod facility is envisioned to become a key node in Indian Railways’ global supply chain, eventually contributing to exports.
