Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Abu Azmi is often in the news because of his statements. Recently, he made a sensitive remark about the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. However, within a few hours, he took back his words. On Tuesday, there was a huge uproar in the Maharashtra Assembly over his statement. After the controversy escalated, the SP leader clarified that he did not insult anyone.

Abu Azmi Takes Back His Statement After Controversy

Abu Azmi shared a long post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) regarding the Aurangzeb controversy. He wrote, “My words have been twisted. I have said what historians and writers have said about Aurangzeb Rahmatullah Ali. I have not made any derogatory comment about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji Maharaj or any other great men - but still if anyone has been hurt by my statement, then I take back my words, my statement. This issue is being made a political issue, and I think that closing the budget session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly because of this is causing harm to the people of Maharashtra.

Maharashtra SP chief Abu Azmi had said that during Aurangzeb’s rule, India was called the ‘golden bird’ because the country's GDP was 24% of the world's economy. He claimed that this was the reason why India was so prosperous at that time. After his statement, many leaders in the Maharashtra Assembly demanded his suspension, leading to the session being adjourned twice.

FIRs Filed Against Abu Azmi

Following his remarks, ruling party leaders in the Maharashtra Assembly accused Abu Azmi of being a descendant of Aurangzeb. They reminded the Assembly that Aurangzeb had brutally killed Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The ruling party members demanded that Azmi should be charged with sedition. Reports indicate that multiple FIRs have been registered against him in different places.
