The situation escalated as BJP leaders demanded strict action, prompting the police to file an FIR against two senior food in-charge students, Mohammad Faiyazullah and Mujassim Ahmad Bhati. Meanwhile, AMU authorities have denied any menu change, attributing the incident to a typing mistake and subsequently removing the responsible students from their positions.
The issue surfaced when a notice was posted in the dining hall of Suleiman Hall on Saturday, stating that Sunday’s lunch menu had been changed to Beef Biryani instead of Chicken Biryani due to popular demand. As the notice circulated on social media, it quickly caught the attention of political leaders and university students, creating a highly sensitive atmosphere.
BJP district general secretary Shivnarayan Sharma strongly opposed the incident, demanding strict action against the responsible students and the registration of an FIR. He condemned the notice, calling it "an inappropriate act in an educational institution."
Jagran has reported - As tensions grew, Dodhpur Police Station in-charge Jitendra Dhama registered a case against Faiyazullah and Bhati, accusing them of hurting public sentiments by issuing the controversial notice. The university administration quickly responded, clarifying that there was no actual change in the menu and the notice was issued due to a typographical error.
AMU Proctor Waseem Ahmad reassured the students and public that the university had not made any changes to the dining hall menu. He urged everyone to ignore rumors and misinformation, stating that meals would continue to be served as usual.
Furthermore, AMU’s Public Relations Officer, Professor Vibha Sharma, confirmed that the two senior food in-charge students had been removed from their roles to ensure such incidents do not occur again.
The controversy quickly became a political issue, with BJP leaders and Hindu students expressing their anger over the notice. Social media platforms were flooded with comments, debates, and calls for strict action, with many questioning how such an oversight occurred in a prestigious institution.
Despite the university's clarification, the incident has fueled discussions about religious and cultural sensitivities in educational institutions. Some supporters of the university have urged people to move past the issue, emphasizing that AMU promptly took corrective action.
Current Status and University’s Stand
While the police investigation is ongoing, AMU has maintained that this was an unintentional mistake and there was no intention to create controversy. Authorities have assured students and the public that necessary disciplinary actions have been taken, and the dining menu remains unchanged.
As the situation continues to evolve, this incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding food choices in India and the broader political implications of such issues.
