Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa has announced that the national capital will witness its first trial of artificial rain through cloud seeding in October-November, aimed at curbing the hazardous air pollution that engulfs the city during winter.
Artificial Rain: Delhi-NCR To Breathe Easy This Winter ?
Sirsa said the initiative, planned in collaboration with IIT Kanpur, has received all necessary permissions. “The Delhi government had planned for cloud seeding, artificial rain, we have got the permission, there will be trial in October-November in Delhi. It will be done in north Delhi and completed from Hindon Airport with Cessna aircraft,” he stated.
Delhi Govt Announces First Trial Run In Oct-Nov To Tackle Pollution, Will It Work ?
He expressed gratitude to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, crediting her for pushing the effort forward. “Because of her endeavours, we will be able to bring relief to people from smog in October-November,” Sirsa added.
The plan comes as Delhi-NCR braces for its annual pollution crisis triggered by stubble burning, vehicular emissions, and adverse weather conditions. The government hopes that artificial rain could help settle particulate matter and provide temporary respite.
Experts, however, remain cautious. While cloud seeding has shown results in some countries, its effectiveness depends heavily on cloud availability and weather conditions. The trial’s outcome will determine whether this strategy can be scaled up as a viable solution for Delhi’s recurring winter smog.
