Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made a significant announcement on Saturday, January 18, 2025. Addressing the issue of tenants being excluded from the benefits of free electricity and water subsidies, Kejriwal promised that his party would introduce a scheme to include tenants in these welfare measures after the Delhi Assembly elections.
Arvind Kejriwal Vows to Extend Subsidies to Tenants
"We have provided free electricity and water in Delhi, but it is unfortunate that tenants are not able to benefit from this. There are various reasons for this, but I believe tenants should also receive these advantages," Kejriwal stated during a public address.
AAP Promises Free Electricity and Water for Tenants in Delhi Post-Elections
Kejriwal explained that Delhi residents currently receive up to 200 units of electricity for free, and a 50% subsidy is provided for usage between 200 to 400 units. However, tenants, due to their rental arrangements, often miss out on these subsidies.
Highlighting the plight of tenants, many of whom hail from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh and live in challenging financial conditions, Kejriwal said, "Tenants are as much a part of Delhi as homeowners. They benefit from free education for their children in government schools, free treatment at Mohalla Clinics and government hospitals, free travel in DTC buses, and elderly pilgrimage schemes. Yet, they are excluded from free electricity and water subsidies. This disparity needs to be addressed."
He further shared his observations from interactions with tenants, who expressed their struggles with rising utility costs. "In some buildings, 100 people live under one roof in poverty, yet they do not receive electricity or water subsidies. It is disheartening. After the elections, our government will ensure that tenants also receive these benefits," Kejriwal asserted.
The proposed scheme reflects AAP's focus on inclusivity and equity, aiming to extend its welfare initiatives to a broader section of Delhi’s population. Kejriwal’s announcement has drawn significant attention, particularly from the tenant community, as the city gears up for its upcoming elections.
