Arvind Kejriwal: In a notable escalation of the excise policy case, Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The arrest came shortly after ED officials visited his residence on Thursday, following a refusal by the Delhi High Court to extend protection from coercive actions against him related to the case.
The visit by the ED to Kejriwal’s office was officially to serve summons concerning the excise policy investigation. Contrary to the ED’s statement, there were claims from various sources that the officials had executed a search warrant at the CM’s residence, leading to speculations about a potential raid and subsequent interrogation of Kejriwal.
Legal Pressures Mount on Kejriwal Following ED Arrest
Over the past months, the ED has issued multiple summonses to Arvind Kejriwal, urging his cooperation with the ongoing investigation into alleged money laundering activities tied to the Delhi liquor excise policy scam. Despite the repeated summonses dated March 4, February 26, February 19, February 2, January 18, January 3, December 22, and November 2 of the previous year, and a recent summons for March 21, Kejriwal had not complied with the requests for his participation in the probe.
The arrest has ignited a political debate, with AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan critiquing the BJP’s alleged strategies against opposition figures, suggesting a pattern of stifling dissent through legal and financial pressures.
