Bihar Assembly Election 2025: The first phase of the Bihar Assembly Election 2025 has taken political observers by surprise. Despite the controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, where nearly 1.53 million voters were reportedly removed in the affected constituencies,  voter participation reached 64.66%, the highest ever recorded in these regions. Rather than discouraging voters, the SIR issue seems to have fueled enthusiasm and awareness among the electorate.

SIR Resentment or Rising Awareness?

The SIR exercise was initially criticized as a move that could disenfranchise marginalized and migrant voters, leading to resentment against the government. However, the turnout data tells a different story. Experts believe the controversy may have actually mobilized citizens to assert their democratic rights, transforming resentment into awareness. This surge reflects a stronger sense of electoral participation and responsibility among Bihar’s voters, who refused to be passive spectators.

Political Advantage: BJP or Mahagathbandhan?

The high turnout has triggered debates over which alliance will benefit from this unexpected wave of participation. If women voters played a dominant role in this turnout, as seen in recent elections,  it could favor the BJP-led NDA. On the other hand, if the participation was driven by anger over the SIR and governance issues, it might boost the Mahagathbandhan’s prospects. Ultimately, the outcome will depend on who converts this awareness into votes on the counting day.

Bihar’s Evolving Democracy

What’s clear is that Bihar’s electorate is becoming more politically conscious and assertive. The 2025 elections highlight a growing determination among voters to make their voices heard, regardless of administrative or political challenges. This phase represents not just an election, but a testament to Bihar’s maturing democracy, one where people are increasingly aware of their power and purpose in shaping the state’s future.
