As troublemakers hurled stones at the police, injuring about six officers, the situation worsened. Additionally, it was alleged that a few vehicles were set on fire, which prompted the police to use force and tear gas to disperse the mob. The police reported that “more than 24 people have been arrested so far.” Contrary to the residents’ claims, authorities in Belra village recorded a death but the inquiry turned up no proof of murder. However, the police believe there was a conspiracy and have opened a separate investigation to learn more about the occurrence. “One person had died, and they (the villagers) are alleging that the person was murdered, but nothing was found in the investigation,” SSP Haridwar Ajay Singh told ANI.
