Covid-19: Weekly caseload up by 163% in Punjab in four weeks, positivity rate above 5%

The Covid-19 cases in the country have seen a steep rise over the last few days. After six months, India recorded over 1,000 cases for the first time. Punjab, too, have seen a spike of nearly 163.41 per cent in the weekly caseload in the last four weeks.

Covid cases spike in Punjab

With people not following Covid-19 restrictions, the number of cases of the virus have spiralled in Punjab. Covid-19 cases in the state have increased over the past four weeks as the states continue to register a steady growth in jail cases. On March 24, 108 cases of the virus were reported in the state. 

Fazilka has emerged as the worst hit district with a weekly positivity rate of 5.88 per cent. Faridkot has 5.56%, Mohali 2.98% and Kapurthala 1.37%. While the permissible limit of Covid positivity have been fixed at five per cent by the World Health Organisation WHO), the national average is 1.31 per cent.

Covid-19 update

India recorded 1,890 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, breaching the record in 149 days. With this, the active cases increased to 9,433. With seven more people succumbing to the deadly virus, the death toll has now reached 5,30,831. The daily positivity rate was recorded at 1.56 per cent. Meanwhile, the number of people who have recovered from the virus has reached 4,41,63,883, with the case fatality recorded at 1.19 per cent. 

As per the union health ministry, 220.65 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country so far.
