Decision to repoll for MCD committee taken to be free and fair: Mayor Shelly Oberoi tells Delhi HC

Delhi mayor Shelly Oberoi on Thursday told the High Court that the decision to order a repelling to elect six members of the powerful standing committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was taken to hold “free and fair” elections. The mayor’s remarks came after two petitions were filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), challenging her decisions to hold repolling.

‘Election must be fair and free’

Senior lawyer Rahul Mehra, appearing for the mayor, said that fresh re-polls are not reelections and the petition should not be entertained when the election process is yet to culminate. 

“Returning officer said everything stands compromised. There is complete commotion. The election must be free and fair and they must also be seen to be free and fair and hence I am directing a re-poll,” argued Mehra before Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav.

Shelly Oberoi announces fresh polling for six members of MCD

The Delhi mayor had announced fresh polling for electing six members of the MCD standing committee on February 27 in view of he commotion due to the clash between councilors of BJP and AAP in the House. The High Court had stayed Re-elections on the petition of BJP leaders Kamaljeet Sehrawat and Shikha Roy.
