Delhi Air Quality Worsens; Curbs on Construction and demolition activities

As the air quality in the Delhi-National Capital Region deteriorated, the center’s air quality panel today applied limits under stage 3 of the Graded Action Response Plan (GRAP) (NCR).Today, the level of ‘Severe’ air pollution reached Delhi and the surrounding territories.

The committee evaluated the situation in the nation’s capital as well as the weather department’s predictions and Delhi’s air quality index at a meeting today.

Construction and demolition work will be prohibited in the whole Delhi-NCR region under stage 3 of the GRAP, with the exception of essential projects

The curbs include a ban on construction and demolition activities throughout the Delhi-NCR region except from necessary projects. All steps under stage 3 of the GRAP will be put into place with immediate effect. Industrial operations that don’t use fuels on the permitted fuels list are prohibited.

Delhi and its surrounding areas must shut down any brick kilns and hot mix facilities using unapproved fuels. The use of stone crushers, mining, and related operations would also be prohibited.

If the air quality continues to deteriorate, the government may eventually put limitations on old gasoline and diesel vehicles.
