Delhi Assembly Election 2025: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi to investigate a complaint filed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Parvesh Verma. AAP accused Verma of violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during the New Delhi Assembly elections and alleged discrepancies in the electoral roll, including unauthorized additions and deletions.
In a letter dated January 9, 2025, the ECI requested an immediate inquiry into the matter and directed the Chief Electoral Officer to take appropriate action in line with the MCC and electoral laws. The Action Taken Report (ATR) must be submitted to the Commission at the earliest.
AAP’s Allegations
The complaint, filed by AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, was presented to the Commission by an AAP delegation during a meeting held on January 9, 2025. The party accused Parvesh Verma of engaging in activities that breach MCC guidelines and highlighted concerns over electoral roll irregularities in the New Delhi Assembly Constituency. These alleged discrepancies, AAP claims, could compromise the integrity of the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections.
ECI’s Response
The ECI emphasized the importance of maintaining electoral transparency and adherence to MCC regulations. It has tasked the Chief Electoral Officer with ascertaining the facts and taking swift action to address the allegations. This directive follows a prior communication from the Hon’ble CM, dated January 5, 2025, which had already brought similar concerns to the Commission’s attention.
The inquiry marks a critical step in ensuring a free and fair election process in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi. With the Legislative Assembly elections approaching, the ECI’s prompt action underscores its commitment to upholding democratic values and maintaining public trust in the electoral system.
