The controversy began when a video of protesters, including a 15-year-old girl, using vulgar and profanity-laced language against PM Modi and his late mother went viral on social media. The clip was filmed during a demonstration organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, ostensibly over competitive examination paper leaks. A Zero FIR was registered at Noida’s Expressway Police Station on July 30 under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita covering intentional insult and public mischief, before being transferred to Delhi’s Parliament Street Police Station.
DON'T MISS
Rather than pushing for prosecution, PM Modi addressed the incident directly in a late-night video message. He described the language used against him as “deeply disturbing” and a “cultural shock,” but appealed for restraint. “These young people should be embraced, not punished. Mistakes happen at a young age, and this is an opportunity to correct those mistakes,” he said, urging that misguided youth be guided rather than dragged through court.
Apology, Relief, and Lingering Backlash
Visibly emotional, the girl publicly apologised with folded hands, calling it her “first and last mistake” and expressing gratitude for what she called a “second life.” Delhi Police subsequently confirmed they would not pursue the case further.
However, her family has alleged serious harassment since the video went viral, including threatening calls and messages after personal phone numbers were circulated online. They have also disputed inaccuracies in the original FIR, which they say wrongly identified the minor as a 25-year-old woman.
Will the Controversy Truly End?
Delhi Police: While the legal proceedings appear closed, questions around the girl’s safety, the accuracy of the initial complaint, and broader debates over free speech versus criminal liability for political remarks remain unresolved.
