Delhi Pollution: CAQM Bans Non-Essential Construction as AQ Nears ‘Severe’ Levels

CAQM warns that pollution levels are expected to increase further due to unfavorable meteorological conditions

Delhi Pollution: The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has taken action as part of Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to combat rising pollution levels in Delhi-NCR. This includes banning non-essential construction activities and the entry of diesel-guzzling trucks into the national capital. The air quality index (AQI) in Delhi reached 402, categorizing it as ‘Severe.’

CAQM warns that pollution levels are expected to increase further due to unfavorable meteorological conditions. Stage III of GRAP also restricts the entry of light commercial vehicles registered outside Delhi and certain heavy goods vehicles.

GRAP categorises actions into four stages:

Stage I – ‘Poor’ (AQI 201-300);
Stage II – ‘Very Poor’ (AQI 301-400);
Stage III – ‘Severe’ (AQI 401-450); and
Stage IV – ‘Severe Plus’ (AQI >450).

The 24-hour average AQI in Delhi is recorded at 392, falling into the ‘Very Poor’ category.
