Delhi’s Electric Bus Fleet Expands, 100 New E-Buses Arrive, More to Follow

Delhi: According to Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) sources with knowledge of the situation, a fresh batch of 100 electric buses had been delivered as part of the Delhi government’s goal to purchase and operate 1500 such buses by the end of the year. Recently, the Mayapuri depot was electrified so that it could house and charge the 100 e-buses. According to officials, DTC was given a fleet of six buses last month to test the situation on Delhi roadways. The first batch arrived earlier this week after the trials went well.

100 New Buses Arrive, 1500 More on the Way

Delhi already has 300 e-buses in operation, and by the end of this year, 1,500 more will be added, bringing the total to 1,800. “The first 100 buses have arrived, and the remaining batches should follow soon. These will first operate from the Mayapuri depot on a variety of routes. By the end of this year, we will add roughly 1,500 buses as part of our goal to electrify Delhi’s bus fleet and cut pollution, according to Ashish Kundra, secretary cum commissioner for Delhi transportation.

Delhi’s DTC Prepares for Arrival of 1500 AC Electric Buses

Currently, DTC operates 40 bus depots and has a fleet of 4,060 buses, including 300 low floor e-buses and 1,256 AC low floor buses. Ten of the 40 depots have already been electrified. In a contract struck with a private firm last year, DTC agreed to operate and maintain 1,500 12-meter low-floor AC electric buses for a period of 12 years with no emissions or noise. According to officials, the entire shipment is scheduled to arrive by November of this year. The following batch is anticipated to arrive soon. According to a different DTC representative, routes will be decided upon this week, and the traffic police and the transportation division will also grant all additional permissions. According to Kailash Gahlot, the minister of transport for Delhi, the services will be introduced. According to officials, the new model has a greater capacity for charging, and one completely charged bus can operate for two shifts.

Scaling Up Fleet and Strengthening Charging Infrastructure

The Delhi government made the decision in 2021 to solely purchase new electric buses in order to replace those that were powered by petroleum. As part of the Delhi EV strategy 2020 to reduce pollution levels, the Delhi government wants to grow the size of its electric bus fleet to 8,280 by 2025. According to experts, the city needs to maintain a strong charging system to improve the fleet when new buses are introduced. “Delhi’s intention to add 100 more electric buses demonstrates the city’s dedication to environmentally friendly transportation. The scaling of e-bus operations now requires a strong charging infrastructure. Amit Bhatt, managing director (India), International Council of Clean Transport (ICCT), stated that Delhi can assure seamless operations, maximise efficiency, reduce pollution, and set an example for other cities by expanding and improving charging infrastructure as soon as possible.
