Existential Crisis In Mamata Banerjee’s TMC? Sudip Bandyopadhyay Among Rebels Raises Eyebrows, Saayoni, Mala Shown The Door

Trinamool Congress is facing what is being described as an existential crisis after Mamata Banerjee removed Saayoni Ghosh and Mala Roy from key party posts, even as senior leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay reportedly joined a growing group of rebel Lok Sabha MPs.

Mamata Banerjee: Jadavpur MP Saayoni Ghosh has been relieved of her duties as president of the youth wing of the TMC, who has been replaced by youth leader Arnab Banerjee. This comes barely a week after she was re-appointed to the post as part of a structural overhaul. The MP for Kolkata Dakshin, Mala Roy, was replaced by Kaliganj MLA Alifa Ahmed as president of the Trinamool Mahila Congress.

“In the wake of the recent developments, the party has asked me to take responsibility for the post,” Kunal Ghosh told reporters after his appointment.

Turmoil Deepens as Sudip Bandyopadhyay Alleges Shift

The party took a hit in 2026 West Bengal Assembly polls. Ghosh and Roy are among a group of TMC rebel MPs which is to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla with a letter seeking recognition as the “real TMC”. Senior MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay is also said to have joined this rebel camp, with the breakaway faction saying that 20 of the party’s 28 Lok Sabha MPs, including Ghosh and Roy, have already signed the letter.

Major developments so far:

Kunal Ghosh appointed as president of TMC’s North Kolkata organisational district, earlier held by Sudip Bandyopadhyay Veteran leader Saugata Roy appointed as chief advisor of TMC’s Lok Sabha wing which currently has only eight MPs still loyal to Mamata Banerjee Rebel MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has said that the rebel bloc, once recognised, would extend support to BJP-led NDA in Parliament Conclusion

The reshuffle seems to be a damage control exercise by Mamata Banerjee to reassert authority over a party organisation that is fast slipping from her grip in the wake of the devastating 2026 Assembly defeat. With a sizeable chunk of TMC’s parliamentary strength reportedly aligning against the leadership, the crisis throws up new questions about the party’s stability and future course in state and national politics.
