Flood Havoc in Tamil Nadu! Houses Inundated, Streets Turned into Waterways, Rescue Team in Action

Investigate the situation that is developing in Tamil Nadu as severe rains cause havoc by flooding streets and submerging homes.

Tamil Nadu Rain: Relief and rescue efforts were carried out by the Indian Air Force and the Navy amid intense rain that caused extensive damage in Tamil Nadu. During the rescue, a number of stranded individuals from various parts of south Tamil Nadu were saved. Additionally, on Wednesday, food and relief supplies were given to flood victims in Madurai and Tuticorin by Indian Navy personnel.

Government Commitment Amidst Crisis

Following days of nonstop rain, the office of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh pledged on Wednesday that the Central government was helping Tamil Nadu as much as possible. “The IAF helicopters are carrying out rescue and relief operations in the flood-affected areas of Tamil Nadu. The central government is providing all possible assistance to Tamil Nadu,” the Defence Minister’s office said in a statement.

State Government’s Active Role in Relief

According to a release from the state government, the state administration has also been involved in the relief effort. “Relief operation is continuing. Loading of food packets and other relief material provided by the state administration on India Coast Guard ALH at first light at Madurai airport on December 20, 2023,” the release stated. Likewise, the Indian Army rescued a car carrying three people from a flood-affected area in Kurukattur, Thoothukudi district.

Record Rainfall in Southern Districts

Heavy rain caused streets in Alanthalai, Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, to remain flooded and houses to flood. Authorities had earlier claimed that record rainfall and flooding had occurred in the southern districts, mainly in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin. For the following six days, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are under a light rain warning, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday.  “Light to moderate rain is likely to occur at one or two places in Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area from December 21 to 26, 2023,” the release said.
