From a Teen Murderer to a Five-Term MLA, The Road Atiq Ahmed Traversed

Atiq Ahmed: Given the influence he possessed, particularly in eastern Uttar Pradesh and after becoming a politician, Atiq Ahmed’s murder may be the most horrific incident to occur in the state of Uttar Pradesh in recent memory.

Atiq Ahmed was charged with murder in his first criminal case 44 years ago

Atiq Ahmed was accused with murder and kidnapping, among more than 100 other crimes. He was recently given a life term in prison for kidnapping. Ahmed was a former Samajwadi Party Lok Sabha MP as well as a five-term MLA. Atiq Ahmed, now 62, was charged with murder in his first criminal case 44 years ago, in 1979. He became well-known during the 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s, a time of political unrest and repeated periods of president’s rule in Uttar Pradesh.

Atiq won the Allahabad West Constituency in 1989 as an independent

According to reports, Atiq rose to prominence as the leader of a syndicate engaged in land theft and extortion in Prayagraj, Allahabad, and other areas in eastern UP. Atiq also began his political career at this time. Atiq won the Allahabad West Constituency in 1989 as an independent, then won the same seat in the subsequent elections on an SP and Apna Dla ticket. He then ran for the 2004 Lok Sabha elections from the Phulpur constituency, which had previously been held by Jawahar Lal Nehru, and won.

He was charged in 2006 with abducting Umesh Pal, a crucial witness in the Raju Pal murder investigation. Atiq turned himself in to the UP police two years later, in 2008, and the Samajwadi Party expelled him. Atiq ran in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections but was defeated because he was out on bail and had never been found guilty. Atiq was detained in connection with an assault case in 2017 and was sent to the Sabarmati prison in Ahmedabad as a result of Supreme Court decisions in 2019. While there, he was accused of planning an abduction.

Atiq was the target of 100 named FIRs

According to UP minister Rajeshwar Singh, Atiq was the target of 100 named FIRs and was currently involved in 54 cases with little progress being achieved because of hostile witness behaviour. According to the police gang chart, Ahmed’s gang had 144 members, and 10 High Court judges had withdrawn from hearing his cases, he claimed, adding that Atiq had assets worth Rs. 11,000 crore. The police claim that property or land worth more than Rs 200 crore was freed from the control of the Mukhtar Ansari gang, and Ansari and his family have been involved in numerous criminal cases.
