In a major development aimed at boosting regional transport infrastructure, the route alignment for the Eastern Orbital Rail Corridor (EORC) in Ghaziabad has been finalised. This corridor will run along the outer boundary of the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and will play a key role in supporting both freight and passenger connectivity across Delhi-NCR and beyond.
Integration With RRTS to Improve Passenger Movement
The Eastern Orbital Rail Corridor is expected to be integrated with multiple public transport systems, including the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), especially in Noida, Greater Noida, and other nearby hubs. Once operational, this integration will allow passengers smoother access to intercity transport, enabling easier movement between major cities in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana without needing to pass through congested Delhi routes.
This connectivity with existing and upcoming high-speed rail and metro networks will drastically cut down travel time and make public transport more accessible for daily commuters.
A Boost for Freight Transport and Industry
One of the key objectives of the EORC is to decongest Delhi-NCR by rerouting heavy freight trains along this corridor. This means goods movement between states like Uttar Pradesh and Haryana can take place without entering the national capital, reducing both traffic congestion and pollution.
Industries located near the corridor will benefit immensely from the smoother supply chain and logistics operations. Plans are also underway to develop industrial zones along the corridor, turning it into an economic growth engine for the region.
Feasibility Study Underway for Timely Execution
The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has already provided ₹1.77 crore to the implementing agency, Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (HRIDC), for a detailed feasibility study. According to GDA Vice Chairman Atul Vats, discussions have been held with the implementing body, and the final presentation of the alignment will soon be made to the Principal Secretary (Housing) along with NCR Planning Board officials.
The rail alignment is likely to run either from within the Eastern PeripheralExpressway or via Masuri. A final decision on this is expected soon, following further technical review and urban planning coordination.
Completion Timeline and Impact on Delhi-NCR
The Eastern Orbital Rail Corridor is targeted for completion by 2030. Once operational, it will not only handle cargo more efficiently but also reduce the traffic burden on major roads and national highways within Delhi-NCR.
According to GDA Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, increasing urban population and vehicle numbers make such alternative transport corridors a necessity. By 2030, the EORC is expected to become a vital component of the region’s logistics and public transport system.
This orbital rail infrastructure could prove to be a landmark achievement, offering sustainable mobility solutions while promoting industrial development without increasing urban stress.
