The Haryana government has announced a phased plan to establish 600 subsidized meal canteens across the state. As part of this initiative, 200 new Atal Shramik Kisan Canteens will be launched by August 2025 to provide clean and nutritious meals to farmers and laborers at just ₹10 per plate.
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini will officially inaugurate these canteens on August 15, marking Independence Day with a significant welfare initiative. This decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by CM Saini in Chandigarh on Thursday.
Expanding the Network of Affordable Meal Canteens
Currently, 175 subsidized food canteens are operational in Haryana:
115 under the Labour Department
53 managed by the Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board (HSAMB)
7 run by sugar mills
These canteens are operated by women’s self-help groups (SHGs), promoting women’s empowerment alongside affordable food access. With the addition of 200 new canteens, the total count will rise to 375, bringing Haryana closer to its goal of 600 canteens.
CM Saini has directed officials to immediately begin identifying suitable locations for these canteens to ensure a smooth rollout.
Subsidized Canteens in Industrial Areas
The Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) has been instructed to establish subsidized meal canteens in all industrial estates across the state. This move aims to provide affordable and nutritious meals to industrial workers.
To support infrastructure development for these canteens, CM Saini proposed utilizing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. He stated that several major corporations have expressed interest in funding this initiative as part of their social responsibility programs.
Wider Implementation in Markets & Construction Sites
The Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board (HSAMB) and the Labour Department have been directed to identify additional locations for these canteens, particularly in agriculture markets and construction sites.
Additionally, CM Saini suggested setting up Atal Shramik Kisan Canteens near mining sites to benefit laborers working in remote areas.
With this large-scale initiative, Haryana aims to ensure affordable meals, improved worker welfare, and enhanced food security, reinforcing its commitment to social development and economic inclusion.
