Hemant Soren Seeks Action Over Alleged Assault on Tribal Woman in Latehar

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has directed Latehar Police to take immediate cognisance of allegations that a tribal woman was assaulted by police personnel in Latehar district. Responding to a post by the Jharkhand Janadhikar Mahasabha, Soren asked the police to investigate the matter, take appropriate action and provide an update.

“This situation is unacceptable,” Soren said in his response, tagging Latehar Police and calling for prompt attention to the complaint.

Tribal Woman Allegedly Assaulted While Grazing Goats

According to the allegations shared by the Jharkhand Janadhikar Mahasabha, a tribal woman identified as Puniya Devi, a resident of Heranj in Latehar, was allegedly assaulted on October 5 while grazing goats.

The organisation alleged that the Baria­t u Station House Officer (SHO), accompanied by three male police personnel in civilian clothes, beat the woman and took her to the police station. The post further alleged that she was assaulted on the way, subjected to inappropriate touching and beaten while suspended at the police station.

The organisation also alleged that caste-based abuses were directed at her. According to its account, she was released the following night.

Reacting to the allegations, Hemant Soren publicly directed Latehar Police to investigate the matter and take appropriate action. His response has brought attention to the complaint and the need for an official inquiry into the alleged conduct of the personnel involved.
