Is Mamata Banerjee Severing All Ties With INDIA Alliance? Says ‘No Relation with Congress’

Mamata Banerjee's bold stand against Congress signals a solo electoral path for Trinamool Congress in Bengal

In a significant political development, Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee has announced that her party will contest the elections for Bengal’s 42 Lok Sabha seats independently, reserving the possibility of a pan-India alliance with the Congress post-election. This declaration comes amidst escalating tensions between the two parties, both crucial members of the Indian opposition bloc.

Mamata Banerjee’s Firm Stance

Expressing her displeasure, the Bengal Chief Minister emphasized the lack of any existing relations with the Congress. She asserted that the Trinamool Congress would fight the elections on its own and decide on a nationwide alliance only after the election results are declared. Notably, Banerjee revealed that there have been no discussions regarding seat-sharing agreements with the Congress.

Alleged Lack of Courtesy and Criticism

Banerjee appeared to criticize Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and his ‘Bharat Jodo Nay Yatra,’ scheduled to enter Bengal. She expressed disappointment, stating that they did not inform her about their presence in her state. This perceived lack of courtesy adds to the growing discord between the two parties.

Seat-Sharing Dispute Continues

The ongoing squabble between the Trinamool Congress and the Congress over seat-sharing has been a focal point in the larger strategy of the Indian opposition bloc against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP. Banerjee had earlier criticized the Congress for an “unjustified” demand for 10-12 Lok Sabha seats in Bengal, offering only two seats based on the Congress’ limited success in the state.

Internal Party Directive

In a strategic move, Banerjee has directed party leaders in Birbhum and Murshidabad districts to start planning for the Lok Sabha election independently. This move gains significance as Murshidabad is the home constituency of Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the state unit boss of Congress, who strongly opposes sharing seats with the Trinamool.
