Jharkhand News: Chief Minister Hemant Soren has warned of a major statewide protest if the Centre does not withdraw the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, alleging that the legislation undermines the rights and interests of Jharkhand and its people.

In a post on social media, Soren questioned why decisions concerning Jharkhand’s mineral resources and land should be determined by the Union government in New Delhi. He alleged that the Bill was passed hurriedly by both Houses of Parliament and described it as unfair to the mineral-rich state.
Soren said the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) would strongly oppose the legislation and warned that protests could be organised across districts, blocks, panchayats and cities if the Centre does not reconsider its position.
Jharkhand News: Soren Raises Concerns Over Welfare Schemes
The Jharkhand leader also linked the issue to the state’s social welfare programmes. He claimed that schemes covering areas such as financial assistance for women, housing, pensions, education and healthcare could face difficulties if the state’s financial position is affected by changes arising from the legislation.
These claims form part of Soren’s political criticism of the proposed changes and would need to be assessed against the Bill’s actual provisions and the Centre’s financial and regulatory framework.
Centre-State Tensions Over Mineral Resources
Jharkhand is one of India’s major mineral-producing states, making the management of mining resources a politically sensitive issue. Questions surrounding the distribution of mineral revenues, land rights, mining regulation and the role of state and central authorities have frequently generated debate.
Soren framed the legislation as an issue of Jharkhand’s constitutional and economic rights, arguing that the state should have a greater say in decisions concerning its natural resources.
