Kerala: Boat carrying 25 women capsizes during race

Boat race

A snake boat tragically capsized on Monday during a boat race in Alappuzha, Kerala. When there were 25 women on board, the event was reported. Rescue workers, on the other hand, were on the scene quickly after learning about the event and got to work. As a result, all further boat races have been suspended for the time being.

According to early reports, the event was reported during the final race between the snake boat of Nedumudi Panchayat and Champakulam Panchayat’s Kattil Thekkethil Chundan.

Soon after the race began, the boat capsized, and nearby fishermen and other viewers hurried to the scene to assist in the rescue operation.

Notably, the snake boat race is a long-standing event in Kerala and involves teams of rowers competing in the long, thin boats. These boat races can draw sizable groups of spectators and are occasionally held on Kerala’s backwaters.

Such an occurrence has previously been documented. Another event of this kind occurred in Alappuzha in 2019 when a boat capsized during a boat racing, killing 10. Following that, a boat competition at Kollam in 2021 saw another vessel capsize, killing 14 spectators.
