KPA withdraws support from N Biren government in Manipur

NDA partner Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA) has withdrawn its support for the N Biren Singh administration in Manipur. Kimneo Haokip Hangshing of Saikul and Chinlunthang of Singhat represent the Kuki People’s Alliance in the Manipur Assembly.

The BJP has 32 Assembly members in Manipur, with the backing of five NPF MLAs and three independent legislators.

The opposition legislators include seven NPP members, five Congress members, and six JD(U) members.

The KPA’s decision to leave the ruling alliance comes at a time when the administration led by Biren Singh is under fire for failing to contain the violence that has killed more than 160 people.

“After careful consideration of the current conflagaration, the continued support for the incumbent government of Manipur led by chief minister N Biren Singh is no longer fructuous. Accordingly, the support of the KPA to the Government of Manipur as hereby withdrawn and can be considered null and void”, a leader to governor Anusuiya Uikey read.

After a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ in the hill district on May 3 to oppose the Metei community’s demand for scheduled tribe (ST) status, violent clashes ensued in Manipur.

Tensions over the relocation of Kuki locals from reserve forest area sparked the violence. Meiteis make up around 53% of Manipur’s population and dwell primarily in the Imphal Valley. Tribals such as Nagas and Kukis, on the other hand, make up another 40% of the population and live in the hill district.
