Lok Sabha Election: Madhya Pradesh Congress Suffers Setback as Six-time MLA Ramniwas Rawat Joins BJP

Lok Sabha Election 2024: In a significant blow to the Madhya Pradesh Congress, six-time MLA Ramniwas Rawat has defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Rawat’s departure marks a major loss for the Congress, as he previously held ministerial positions in the Digvijay Singh government and served as the executive president of the MP Congress. His induction into the BJP took place in the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.

Rawat’s decision to switch parties comes at a crucial time, coinciding with a visit by senior Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to the state. Rawat, who hails from the Vijaypur constituency in Sheopur district, has a long-standing political career, having been elected MLA six times from Vijaypur. Despite his prominence, Rawat faced defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections against BJP candidate Narendra Singh Tomar from the Morena seat.

Notably, Rawat is recognized as a prominent leader of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community, adding significance to his defection to the BJP.

This latest setback for the Congress in Madhya Pradesh follows closely on the heels of another blow, as its candidate for the Indore Lok Sabha constituency, Akshay Kanti Bamb, withdrew nomination and joined the BJP.

The Congress has not hesitated to point fingers, with Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh alleging threats and intimidation tactics employed against its candidates in Surat and Indore. The nomination form of the Congress candidate in Surat was rejected due to discrepancies, clearing the path for the BJP nominee to secure victory unopposed from the seat in Gujarat.

Ramesh highlighted the situation on Twitter, stating, “Since 1984, the Congress has not won Surat and Indore Lok Sabha seats. Yet in 2024, Congress candidates in both seats were threatened, intimidated, and bulldozed into withdrawing their nominations.”
