MP govt asks Garba organisers to allow entry at pandals after checking ID cards

The state government of Madhya Pradesh has ordered the Navratri Garba organizers to only permit access after checking identity cards for the first time. Posters saying “Non-Hindus Are Not Allowed To Enter” are also sometimes displayed outside Garba pandals.

Eight Muslim teenagers have been detained over the past two days for breaking into Garba pandals while pretending to be someone else. Muslim teenagers are charged with photographing Hindu girls and making lewd remarks about them.

The identity cards of participants are examined by state government directives, and those who are permitted access to Ujjain get Tilak placed on their foreheads.

Outside the Garba locations, signs have been posted stating that non-Hindus are not permitted in the pandal and that volunteers are inspecting participants’ identification documents, such as their driver’s licenses and Aadhaar cards.

Families are let enter without having their identification checked, but they are very strict about examining the identities of single men.

The Kesariya Garba Utsav organizers in Narmadaupuram have established a dress code. Women can enter in a saree or salwar suit, but men can only enter in kurta-pyjamas. Entry to the venue is prohibited for those wearing jeans, pants, or t-shirts. Single men cannot enter either. The identities of Garba participants are similarly verified in Bhopal.

To prevent “love jihad,” a term used by right-wing groups to describe an alleged conspiracy by Muslim men to court and seduce Hindu women, even though courts and the Union government did not officially recognize it, state culture minister Usha Thakur suggested that entry into Garba dance venues in the state during the Navratri festival should only be permitted after checking of identity cards.

“The garbage organizers are currently on guard. Attendees at Garba events should bring their IDs. No one should be permitted without an ID. Garbage had developed into a tool for love jihad, she warned, so take this advice to heart.
