MP News: Lakhs of students going without midday meals as around 10 lakh workers go on strike

MP News: Since August 1, students in most schools and anganwadis in Madhya Pradesh have been going without midday meals since over 10 lakh women involved in making and delivering cooked food have been on strike indefinitely.

Over two crore kids in Madhya Pradesh get food under the midday meal scheme.

According to the workers who are protesting, the state government is not paying its fair portion of the noon meal programme. Members of the self-help group claim that they are only paid for 60% of the meals supplied in schools.

“The central government bears 60 per cent of the total cost incurred, while the state government is supposed to bear the remaining 40 per cent cost. While the central government is giving its share, the state government does not have the budget for the same. Our demand is for 100 per cent payment,” the president of the self-help group association, Sarita Om Prakash Bhagel, told India Today.

In Madhya Pradesh, there are 96,185 self-help groups that provide food through the midday meal scheme. Each of these self-help groups employs eleven women, and approximately ten lakh women who work in the midday meal scheme are on strike.

Along with them, there are 232,000 chefs on strike. These cooks are paid Rs 2,000 per month and are asking an increase in wages.
