MP News: Strict Action Against Hookah Bars in Madhya Pradesh, Fines Up to One Lakh

Madhya Pradesh has announced stringent measures against hotel and restaurant operators found operating hookah bars. The state government has issued a notification, outlining penalties for the operation of hookah bars, with provisions for up to three years of imprisonment and fines reaching up to one lakh rupees. The notification, released just before the New Year celebrations, grants inspectors and higher-ranking officials the authority to take strict actions.

Key Provisions of the Notification:

1. Penalties for Hookah Bar Operation: The notification includes provisions for imposing penalties on establishments operating hookah bars. Offenders may face imprisonment for up to three years and fines extending up to one lakh rupees.
2. Empowerment of Inspectors and Officials: The notification empowers inspectors and officials holding higher positions to take decisive actions against violators. This move is aimed at ensuring swift and effective enforcement of the regulations.
3. Prohibition in Designated Establishments: As per the amended Madhya Pradesh Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act 2023, residential hotels, restaurants, food houses, and entertainment establishments designated by the state government will be prohibited from operating hookah bars.

Enforcement of the Amended Law:

The state government has enforced the amended Madhya Pradesh Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act 2023, bringing hookah bars within its purview. The amended law restricts the operation of hookah bars in establishments identified by the government, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to regulate tobacco and related products.
