Supreme Court fines a man Rs 25k for claiming that YouTube had diverted him from studying for an exam by playing offensive Ads

The Supreme Court has dismissed a plea filed by a man seeking Rs 75 lakh compensation from YouTube for allegedly carrying sexually explicit advertisements, which he claimed, distracted him during his preparation for Madhya Pradesh examination.

A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Abhay S Oka slammed petitioner Anand Kishor Choudhary for filing “atrocious” petition and imposed a cost of Rs 25,000 on him for “utter wastage” of courts valuable time. The petitioner had the option of choosing not to see the advertisements, the Court stated.

Anand Kishor Choudhary asked for Rs. 75 lakh in compensation from Google-owned streaming provider You Tube. He asserted that the sexual content of the platform’s advertisements distracted him from his study efforts, preventing him from passing the Madhya Pradesh recruitment exam. Additionally, he called for a total ban on nudity on social media.

At first, the bench was leaning toward fining the petitioner Rs 100,000. He apologized profusely before the court, stating that his parents are workers, and asked for the petition to be withdrawn.The fine was later reduced to Rs 25,000 by the bench.

Although the petitioner said that he was unemployed, the bench stated that recovery would be made if payment was not made.
