Manipur Violence: Assam Rifles replaced by CRPF

Hours after the central paramilitary force and the Assam Rifles were pulled out of a district in violence-hit Manipur, police have registered a case against the security force personnel. The administrative control of the Assam Rifles rests with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, while the Army has operational control.

It is alleged that Assam Rifles personnel prevented the state police from arresting those who were allegedly behind the killing of three people in Bishnupur district last Saturday.

The case was registered on August 5, hours after an alleged standoff between Manipur Police and Assam Rifles personnel surfaced on social media.

In a video accessed by NDTV, Manipur police commandos are seen arguing and accusing Assam Rifles personnel of interfering in their operation while chasing suspected militants.

The FIR, lodged by the officer-in-charge of Phougakchao Ikhai police station in Bishnupur district, states, “On reaching the Qutub Wali Masjid located in Kwakta Ward 8 along the Pholjung Road, the state police teams were stopped and 9 Assam Rifles personnel. Due to which there was an obstacle in the discharge of his duty bound by law.
