Manipur Violence: ‘Situation chaotic, can’t say what’s happening,’ CM Biren Singh after meeting Amit Shah

Manipur Violence: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has stated that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is very concerned about the changing nature of violence driven activities in Manipur. In a statement to PTI after his meeting with Amit Shah, he said “The initial phase of the violence was highly political and sensitive, but we cannot say what is happening now. The situation is very chaotic.” He also stated that how exchange of fire in the peripheral areas and the civil unrest in the valley districts has become a matter of deep concern for the Union HM Amit Shah. CM Biren Singh retuned to Imphal from New Delhi  late on Sunday Night.

Crackdown on Bunkers

The Chief minister’s statement has come amidst the crackdown on bunkers allegedly built by militants by state police and central forces. As many as 12 bunkers have been claimed as destroyed by the forces. On Sunday, Manipur police had to release 12 captured militants belonging to  Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) after being encircled by a mob of over 1500 people. Ethnic clashes first broke out after May 3 when hill districts organized a Tribal Solidarity March to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

All Party meet in Delhi

The chief minister said “Shah raised issues such as the attacks on the house of Union Minister of State for External Affairs RK Ranjan Singh and the residence of state minister Sushindro Meitei, the ongoing arson and destruction of government properties and the hampering of the movement of security forces.” A report about the measures taken up by the state government to restore peace and normalcy in state was submitted by the Chief Minister. During the meeting, some parties demanded sacking of Biren Singh and imposition of President’s rule in the state.
