Meerut News: Politics may flare up in the midst of the conflict between the mediaeval royal mosque of Meerut and Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura and Gyanvapi in Kashi. According to eminent historian Dr. KD Sharma, the Shahi Masjid was once a Buddhist monastery. They claim that Mahmood Ghaznavi constructed the royal mosque after destroying the Buddhist monastery. They have evidence supporting this. According to the Islamic calendar, the invader Mahmud Ghaznavi, who arrived in India in 410 Hijri, destroyed the Buddhist monastery that had been erected on the highest mound of ancient Meerut and replaced it with a mosque. This was according to Dr. KD Sharma, Head of the History Department at Meerut College. Today, this is referred to as Shahi Jama Masjid.

Mauryan Stone Pillars Suggest Buddhist Monastery Under Meerut's Jama Masjid

He stated that an earthquake in 1875 caused some damage to this mosque. Many Buddhist and Mauryan stone art pillars may be seen in this. This pillar was a gift from his friend Aslam Saifi. He took them home with him. Later, when they compared historical data, it was evident that the Buddhist monastery was destroyed in order to make way for the Shahi Jama Masjid. According to historian KD Sharma, the pillar has elephant artefacts. It is easy to see the lotus and sun emblems. This form of art is referred to as Indo Buddhist art. The Mauryan period is represented by this pillar. Additionally, 119 years ago, this incident was noted in the British Gazetteer. On page 273 of Volume 4 of the Gazetteer, it is stated that the Jama Masjid might have once been a Buddhist temple that was built upon.

Conflicting Claims Over Meerut's Shahi Jama Masjid's Origins

It received its information in 1875. Hasan Mehndi, Mahmud Ghaznavi's Wazir, erected it. It was restored during the Mughal era by Humayun. According to Dr. KD Sharma, the eminent historian Lakshmi Narayan Vashishtha also cites the destruction of several holy sites in Meerut by Muslim invaders in his piece Itihaas Vatayan on pages 378 and 379 of the Rajarshi Tandon Janmashati Granth. According to Aligarh Muslim University professor Shehrkaji Zainus Sajiddin Siddiqui, Shahi Jama Masjid is roughly 800 years old. Claims made by historians about its construction and remains are false. Bale Miyan was one of Ghaznavi's relatives who had travelled to Meerut. He resided here for a short while before moving on to Bahraich. According to Amar Ujala He stated that Nasiruddin Mahmud of the Delhi Sultanate had erected this mosque, as Khalilbal Nizami had stated in his book Sultanat-e-Dehri Ke Mazhabi Trendanat. This is roughly 200 years after Mahmood Ghaznavi's arrival. Such behaviour, he claimed, ruins relationships. This ruins the ambiance. Harmony has long been symbolised by the Shahi Jama Masjid.
