Jama Masjid Withdraws Ban On Girls’ Entry On Lt Governor’s Request

The Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid has agreed to withdraw the order banning the entry of girls into the mosque following the request of Lieutenant Governor of Delhi VK Saxena.

The sources of Raj Bhavan gave this information on Thursday. According to sources, Saxena spoke to Imam Bukhari and requested in this regard and Imam Bukhari agreed to withdraw the order on the condition that the visitors respect and maintain the sanctity of the mosque.

The administration of Jama Masjid had put up notices at its main gates stating that the entry of girls alone or in groups is prohibited in the mosque.

After the controversy started on this decision, the Shahi Imam said that this order is not for the girls coming to offer Namaz. Women’s rights activists called this decision unacceptable.

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal

Describing it as a violation of women’s rights, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal said that she is issuing the notice. At the same time, sources in the National Commission for Women said that it has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter and is deciding on the course of action.

Sources in the mosque administration said that a few days ago, notices were pasted outside the three main entrances, on which there is no date. However, attention has now gone to them.

This is what notice says

“Jama Masjid mein ladki ya ladkiyon ka akele daakhla mana hai (The entry of a girl, or girls is not permitted in Jama Masjid),” read the notice.

According to Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari, this decision was taken after some incidents came to the fore in the mosque premises. He said, “Jama Masjid is a place of worship and people are welcome for it. But the girls are coming alone and waiting for their friends. This is not the place for this work. It’s banned.”

In the past too, the shooting of music videos by visitors to the mosque was banned. An old board at the entrance of the mosque facing the Matia Mahal area reads, “Shooting music videos inside the mosque is strictly prohibited.”

Sources in Jama Masjid administration claimed that people who behave inappropriately are being stopped and not all women are being stopped.
