The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced that Parvesh Verma will serve as Delhi’s next Deputy Chief Minister, following his victory over former CM Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi Assembly seat. Meanwhile, Rekha Gupta, the MLA from Shalimar Bagh, has been named the new Chief Minister of Delhi.
Reacting to Gupta’s appointment, Parvesh Verma expressed his happiness, stating, "It is a matter of joy." His victory over Kejriwal marked a major political shift in Delhi, as the AAP chief, who had won the New Delhi seat in 2013, 2015, and 2020, lost by a margin of 4,089 votes. Verma secured 30,088 votes, while Kejriwal and Congress' Sandeep Dikshit received 25,999 and 4,568 votes, respectively.
Parvesh Verma’s Political Journey
At 47 years old, Parvesh Verma is a well-established BJP leader with a strong electoral track record. He has been a two-time Member of Parliament (MP) from West Delhi and has held multiple leadership roles within the party.
In 2013, he was elected as MLA from Mehrauli.
In 2015, he won the West Delhi Lok Sabha seat as a BJP candidate.
In 2019, he was re-elected from West Delhi with a massive margin of over 4.78 lakh votes.
Despite not being officially announced as a candidate early on, Verma ran an aggressive campaign in New Delhi, which ultimately led to his triumph over Kejriwal.
BJP’s Historic Comeback in Delhi
This election marks a significant political comeback for the BJP, which has reclaimed power in Delhi after 26 years, defeating the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the February 5 Assembly elections. Verma, along with Rekha Gupta, was among the top contenders for the CM post, alongside senior BJP leaders like Vijender Gupta, Satish Upadhyay, Pawan Sharma, Ashish Sood, and Shikha Rai.
As Deputy Chief Minister, Parvesh Verma is expected to play a crucial role in shaping Delhi’s governance alongside CM Rekha Gupta, bringing in BJP’s vision for the capital. All eyes are now on the new leadership team as they gear up to take charge.
