Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on October 8, 2025, marking a major advancement in India’s aviation and infrastructure development. The airport is expected to significantly reduce congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and improve regional as well as international connectivity.
PM Modi to inaugurate Navi Mumbai International Airport on October 8
Located in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, approximately 37 km from South Mumbai, NMIA is being developed over 1,160 hectares and is poised to become one of India’s most advanced greenfield airports. The first phase of the project includes Terminal 1, with an annual capacity to handle 20 million passengers and 0.8 million metric tonnes of cargo.
A new milestone in India’s aviation infrastructure
Designed by the globally acclaimed Zaha Hadid Architects, the terminal’s architecture draws inspiration from the lotus flower, symbolizing purity and prosperity. The terminal features 12 sculptural columns resembling unfolding petals and 17 mega columns supporting the roof canopies. The design not only enhances visual grandeur but also ensures resilience against seismic activity, wind pressure, and structural loads.
The airport integrates sustainable technologies, including rainwater harvesting systems, solar power generation, and efficient waste management, aligning with India’s vision of eco-conscious infrastructure. NMIA is also expected to boost economic growth by creating thousands of jobs and supporting Maharashtra’s logistics and tourism sectors.
Officials said the project will operate in synergy with Mumbai’s existing airport, forming a dual-airport system for the metropolitan region. With its strategic location and modern design, NMIA is envisioned as a key hub for domestic and international flights, connecting India’s western coast to major global destinations.
The inauguration marks another major step in Prime Minister Modi’s vision of building world-class infrastructure under the ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ roadmap, reflecting India’s growing global stature in transportation and innovation.
