Protest: Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi has shifted all classes online with immediate effect following clashes between protesting students and campus security guards on Saturday, October 24. The university said the decision was taken in view of the prevailing situation and to ensure the safety and security of students. Online classes will continue until further notice.

The confrontation reportedly erupted when security guards moved to remove tents set up by protesting students, including those observing a hunger strike. Videos of the incident showed students and guards involved in a scuffle on the university campus.
Students Demand Restoration of Union Elections: Protest
The protest began on October 12, with students demanding the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU), which was dissolved in 2006. The protesters have also sought an official schedule for union elections, withdrawal of disciplinary action against some students, and the removal of the university’s Chief Proctor and Security Advisor. Five students have been on an indefinite hunger strike since the protest began.
The students’ demand for an elected union has remained at the centre of the dispute, with the ongoing agitation affecting normal campus activities.
University Cites Safety Concerns
In its October 24 notice, the university directed departments and faculty members to make arrangements for online teaching and asked students to attend classes through the prescribed online schedule. No date has been announced for the resumption of physical classes.
